Celebrating 150 Years

Since we opened our doors in 1875, Smith has been educating women to be forces of change. Throughout 2025, we’ll reflect on and celebrate all the ways Smith has pushed the world forward. Celebrate with us!

A Culture of Community

Kristine Le ’25

Biochemistry major; Statistical & Data Sciences minor

“I’m looking at graduate schools now, and I always ask them about their engagement. The robotics outreach program is a group effort of the student team, the community partners, and the Jandon Center. The center took a chance on me and funded my proposal. That’s what I love about Smith: You have an idea and a passion, and they’ll support you.”

Becky Shaw

Associate Dean of Students

“Working at Smith has been such an honor and a pleasure for 20 years that it doesn’t always feel like work... Smith, in my mind, is like no other college community. It truly, truly is a special place.”

Loretta Ross

Associate Professor of the Study of Women & Gender

“I start off almost every class telling [my students], ‘I can do two things. I can protect you from the truth, or I can teach you about the truth, but I can’t do both at the same time. But I’m going to make you proud to be alive right now knowing you can make a difference.’”

Nancy Weiss Malkiel ’65

Professor Emerita of History, Princeton University

“Take every opportunity to get to know Smith alumnae. I have forged friendships with an amazing array of women—some 30 years older than I am—women who have modeled for me ways of living a productive and fulfilling life that I could not otherwise have imagined.”
